Privacy Policy for LearnReader

This Privacy Policy explains how LearnReader ("LearnReader," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, retains, and protects information when you use the LearnReader mobile application and related services (collectively, the "Service").

1. Information We Collect

Account information

If you use Sign in with Apple, we receive an Apple account identifier and, if you choose to share them, your name and email address (which may be an Apple private relay address). We also create an internal LearnReader user identifier and authentication records. Sign in with Apple is optional and is used for account-based features such as syncing supported learning data across devices.

You can use LearnReader and purchase subscriptions without creating a personal account. When you use the Service without Sign in with Apple, we create an internal installation identifier and internal user identifier to provide the Service, manage usage limits, maintain subscription entitlements, prevent fraud, and support restore and troubleshooting flows.

Content and learning data

• Text you select for AI translation, the surrounding sentence or context, source and target languages, your selected learner level, and any existing translation needed to process the request.
• Flashcards and learning records, including words, sentences, translations, pronunciation, review dates, review results, scheduling data, and learning progress. If cloud synchronization is enabled for your account, this data is stored on our servers so it can be synchronized across devices.
• Reading, video, manga, bookmark, and app preference data stored locally on your device.

Books, manga images, and videos that you import remain on your device and are not uploaded by LearnReader as complete files. When you request an AI translation, only the selected text and relevant surrounding context are transmitted for that request.

Subscription and transaction information

Apple and Adapty provide us with information needed to manage subscriptions, such as product, purchase, renewal, expiration, entitlement, transaction status, and whether a transaction occurred in Apple's production or sandbox testing environment. We use the transaction environment to keep test purchases separate from real subscription and revenue reporting. We do not receive or store your full payment card details.

Feedback and support information

If you use in-app feedback features to report a problem or suggest an improvement, we collect the message you submit, the feedback type, your internal LearnReader user identifier, the time of submission, and any contact information you choose to provide. For problem reports, you may also choose to include app and device diagnostics, such as app version, build number, bundle identifier, device model and name, operating system version, language, and time zone. Screenshots, imported files, and reading content are not attached automatically.

Usage, analytics, and technical information

We may collect:

• App launches, session timestamps, and app interactions such as screens viewed, onboarding progress, feature usage, translation outcomes, flashcard activity, paywall interactions, and purchase events.
• Learning settings such as language pair, learner level, and reading goal.
• App instance, installation, and internal user identifiers used to connect analytics, subscription, usage-limit, and account records.
• Device, operating system, app version, approximate location inferred from IP address, IP address, request time, and server and diagnostic logs.
• The app distribution channel reported as a development build, TestFlight build, App Store build, or unknown. We use this technical value to keep internal and beta-testing activity separate from production product analytics. It is not used to grant premium access or for advertising.
• App crash and non-fatal diagnostic information, such as exception or signal type, affected thread, stack trace, app version and build, device model, operating-system version, app state, and recent analytics breadcrumbs used to understand what happened before a failure.

We may associate this usage information with an internal installation or user identifier to measure active users, sessions, retention, feature adoption, and service reliability. Product analytics events do not include selected text, translation content, imported files, book or manga content, or the addresses of webpages you open. We do not intentionally attach this reading content to automated crash or non-fatal diagnostic reports.

LearnReader disables Adapty's collection of the Apple advertising identifier (IDFA). We do not use the information described in this Policy for cross-app behavioral advertising.

2. How We Use Information

We use information to:

• authenticate users when they choose account-based features and maintain account security;
• provide AI translations and personalized learning features;
• store and synchronize flashcards and learning progress when cloud sync is enabled;
• manage usage limits, subscriptions, purchases, and premium access;
• operate, troubleshoot, secure, analyze, and improve the Service;
• prevent fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access;
• respond to support, privacy, and legal requests; and
• comply with applicable law and enforce our Terms of Use.

Where required by applicable law, we rely on your consent. In other cases, we process information as necessary to provide the Service, comply with law, or pursue legitimate interests such as security and product improvement, subject to your rights.

3. How We Share Information

We share information only as needed with the following categories of recipients:

• Apple: Sign in with Apple, App Store payments, subscription management, and related platform services.
• Adapty: subscription entitlement management, paywalls, purchase analytics, and subscription-related support.
• Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics: app usage measurement, product analytics, crash reporting, non-fatal error diagnostics, stability metrics, and troubleshooting context such as analytics breadcrumbs.
• OpenAI and Google Gemini: depending on the provider configured for the Service, selected text, surrounding context, language settings, and learner level may be sent to generate an AI translation.
• Infrastructure providers: hosting, database, networking, security, and operational service providers that process information on our behalf.
• Telegram: delivery of operational alerts, aggregated product and service-health summaries, and support feedback messages to LearnReader's private developer support channels. Aggregated summaries may include user, session, feature, subscription, and server-performance counts, but do not include reading or translation content.
• Legal and safety recipients: authorities or other parties when reasonably necessary to comply with law, protect rights and safety, investigate abuse, or respond to valid legal process.

These providers process data under their own terms and privacy policies or under agreements requiring appropriate protection. Their processing may occur in countries other than your own.

Relevant third-party policies include Apple Privacy, Adapty Privacy, Google Privacy, OpenAI Privacy, and Telegram Privacy.

We do not sell your personal information.

4. Data Retention

• Account and synchronized flashcard data are retained while your account is active and as needed to provide synchronization.
• Internal installation identifiers, daily usage counters, and subscription records are retained as needed to enforce limits, provide entitlements, prevent fraud, support restore flows, and maintain transaction records.
• AI translation responses may be retained in a shared translation cache for up to 180 days to improve speed and reduce repeated processing. The cache is not intended to identify the user who submitted a request.
• Detailed session and product analytics event records are retained for up to 13 months. Summary account activity, such as first and most recent activity, a cumulative session count, and the most recently reported app and operating-system versions, may be retained while the internal user record remains active. Security, server, and diagnostic records are retained according to operational, fraud-prevention, legal, and provider retention needs.
• Feedback and support messages are retained as long as reasonably needed to review, respond to, troubleshoot, and improve the Service, unless a longer retention period is required for legal, security, or dispute-resolution purposes.

When information is no longer needed, we delete or de-identify it, subject to legal, security, backup, dispute-resolution, and fraud-prevention obligations. Information processed independently by Apple or another provider is subject to that provider's retention practices.

5. Your Choices and Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:

• request access to or a copy of your personal information;
• request correction or deletion;
• object to or restrict certain processing;
• withdraw consent where processing is based on consent; and
• request data portability or appeal a privacy decision where applicable.

If you use Sign in with Apple, you can initiate account deletion in LearnReader from Settings > Account > Delete Account. Deleting the app by itself does not delete your account or server-side data. Account deletion also does not automatically cancel an App Store subscription; subscriptions must be managed through your Apple account settings.

You can also submit a privacy request or withdraw consent by emailing learnreader@proton.me. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. You may manage Sign in with Apple access and App Store subscriptions in your Apple account settings.

6. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information, including encrypted network connections and secure storage of authentication credentials in the iOS Keychain. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Children's Privacy

LearnReader is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If the law in your country requires a higher minimum age for a person to consent to data processing, a parent or legal guardian must provide any required consent. Contact us if you believe a child provided personal information without appropriate authorization.

8. International Data Transfers

We and our service providers may process information in countries where we or they operate. Those countries may have different data protection laws. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the Service or applicable law changes. We will post the updated version at this URL and revise the date above. If a change materially affects your rights, we will provide additional notice where required.
